Keeping music fun is the most important way to keep a student motivated and engaged. Many challenges come along the way with students, and I make it a goal to attack problem areas efficiently and effectively so that the most progress can be made while still maintaining enjoyment. What I've found is that students appreciate this method because it shows that I am paying attention and that I do care about their progress. Read More

Principles and structure. This is the only way to learn. When you build a house, you spend more money in setting the foundation. This is my tactic. Every one wants to learn to play efficiently, but this takes time and qualatative effort. Rudiments and drills will be every students daily practice. Any one can hit a cymbal and kick a drum, but only some one who spends quality time can develop skills to adapt to any and all musical genres. Read More

I have been passionate about music and teaching from a very young age. I began playing the flute at age 10 and eagerly continued, participating in every musical opportunity I had in middle school, high school, and college. In 2010, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Susquehanna University with my Bachelors in Music degree in Music Education with a concentration in flute. Immediately after graduating, I took an orchestra director position in Charlotte, North Carolina where I have been teaching for the last five years. Read More

The methods I choose fora studentwill be individualized based on wherethat student is and wherethe studentwould like to go. I will select different methods for different kinds of learners. However, we will certainlybegin by looking atthe student'sinstrument and learning environment and evaluate the technique and knowledge of the student. We will also begin by discussing long term goals and setting clear short term goals in ear-training, sight-reading, performance as well as theory and composition. The keyboard is a great place to learnmusical fundamentals, especially for beginners because it is so easy to visualizeintervals and patterns. I use an integrated style of lesson that is custom-made to each individual student regarding his/her voice type and needs, as well as different areas of music language that need more studying, like theory, music notation, solfege, rhythm, basic piano technique, ear training. When a student is ready, subjects like stage presence and audition technique become part of our lessons. But first and foremost rule in my studio is to have fun while learning. My studio is a no-judgement zone, where I encourage my students to be free, to express themselves. Read More

We gradually increase the tempo over the next several weeks. Pieces like that will be rehearsed at the end of each lesson after working through a few passages in Alfreds book. At the beginning, I ask my adults what music theyre interested in learning. I like to gear my warmup exercises and cool down exercises towards that style and I always put aside a few minutes at the end to work on whatever music they desire. Read More

I've been teaching since about my sophomore year in college, So that puts me at approximately 4 years at this. I have taught private lessons, entire sections and entire ensembles. Ensembles that I have taught have gone on to win many awards, I've even had a few of my private students make it to their district bands. I like to encourage my students to practice daily, at about 45 minutes to an hour outside of lessons. Read More
