I began studying music at age 10.  By twelve years old I began serious study and practice on the piano.  By 15 I was playing weekly church services on both organ and piano.  I attended both Rutgers College and Berklee School of Music in Boston, where I continued my studies in piano, jazz composition and arranging, voice and performance. Having taught many students over the years, my favorite books for young beginners are the Rubank series and Pares Scale book. These give a good foundation and progression and have easy to read fingering charts. Once a student gets going with these I introduce simple duet books so that, by playing with me, they develop a strong sense of tone and intonation. I teach vocal technique to students of all ages and genres. For beginner students I work on each of their registers (chest voice, head voice, mix and flageolet) emphasising range and flexibility to begin with and then adding strength work as we progress. The student and I will choose repertoire appropriate to their level while still posing a challenge to apply their newly learned technique in the context of singing a song. Read More
