Typically I start with Hal Leonard or Alfred's beginner books. Once the students grasp the fundamentals I add in theory, scales, and some fun stuff that they are interested as well. When the student is engaged and interested, they are more likely to continue and practice. It is not possible for every part to be fun and games, however, even the most fundamental learning can be engaging! I am pretty new to teaching, since I started at around August of 2017. I taught for around one year in my senior year of high school, and had to leave for college during summer of 2018. I taught students at any place they were convenient with: sometimes at my studio, sometimes at their homes. I loved teaching when I first started. My belief is that performed music should be fun for the performer as well as the audience. I will always give my best effort when I teach but students are also required to put in effort if they want to learn and become passionate about music. I encourage my students to have regular practice routines but make sure they are not overwhelmed. When I teach I also like to ask my students questions (such as how much bow do you need for this note? or what is the best approach to make this phrase more expressive with your left-hand?) so that students can learn to come up with solutions by themselves and can feel comfortable practicing without my always being there to guide them.
