My students are encouraged to prepare for auditions and recitals as well as practicing music theory and composition for a deeper appreciation of the art. When it comes to children, I believe that structure is necessary. So, I usually assign arrangements from a book based on their skill level. In most cases, I use Hal Leonard books and move chronologically from beginner and onward. As students progress, I tend to shift more towards fundamental skills, like how to properly pick certain songs, how scales work, and how to build relevant chords. My experience as a teacher spans many subjects including not only music but also academics and physical education. I've worked as a gymnastics and motor skills instructor for children aged 3-5. I have been in charge of outreach programs through the Houston Food bank, traveling to various locations in the Houston area to give lessons on nutrition and physical fitness to children of all ages. I like to encourage using a set schedule for lessons and practicing so that student can develop the habits they need to progress through musical learning.
