I've been teaching piano for over 10 years, teaching both privately and in group classes. I've taught students from 7 1/2 to 75. My passion for teaching has extended into my graduate studies, where I focused on piano pedagogy. In addition, I've spent the last 5 years working in a University Teaching Center, working with faculty members and graduate students on how to improve their classroom teaching! I would love to teach all ages, as I feel it is never too early or too late to learn about music. My students are encouraged to prepare for auditions and recitals as well as practicing music theory and composition for a deeper appreciation of the art. When it comes to children, I believe that structure is necessary. So, I usually assign arrangements from a book based on their skill level. In most cases, I use Hal Leonard books and move chronologically from beginner and onward. As students progress, I tend to shift more towards fundamental skills, like how to properly pick certain songs, how scales work, and how to build relevant chords. Though I went on to pursue other studies, music has remained both a leading player in my life and the field in which I have the most raw talent and experience. Since then I have performed in several groups and as a solo act. I played fiddle for the Galveston based folk band "The Grog". I was the resident church pianist for Christ Presbyterian Church in Daphne, AL, as well as the Keyboardist and backup singer for the Daphne based classic rock band "Mid Life Crisis" for three years. Dr. Yunhee K. taught piano for over 15 years across diverse settings. Most recently, she served as Assistant Professor of Music at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, teaching applied music lessons, class piano, and online music appreciation while also serving as a collaborative pianist for choirs, student recitals, and faculty performances. She previously taught as Adjunct Lecturer in Piano and Staff Pianist at Merrimack College, where she guided students in applied piano and collaborative work, and as Adjunct Piano Instructor at Magdalen College. For beginning students (children or adults) I begin with an introduction to the major scale and implement it into our vocal warm-ups. Once the student has developed and progressed over certain aspects I will introduce repertoire that will be learned and performed at the end. I often create my own custom lesson plans because every student is different and requires certain attention. I love sharing my passion For music and nothing is more rewarding than seeing a students face light up when they recognize their accomplishment. I like to move through each lesson at a pace that is comfortable for the students. I love to build lessons that students are going to be motivated for by building lessons for their specific need and interest.
