I began teaching private lessons part-time during my undergraduate, and I have worked full-time in education, either as a band director or private lesson teacher, for the past 14 years. As a Bachelor's and Master's student, I honed my musicianship and technique to an incredible degree; as a band director, I learned a great deal about how to connect with and break concepts down for young students. After that I received a bachelors degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas and then a masters degree in trumpet performance from the University of Texas at Arlington. I keep a busy schedule as a freelance musician and perform regularly with the Dallas Jazz Orchestra. I also do the occasional the tour with different groups. In terms of repertoire, I focus almost exclusively on classical music. While I am a fan of other genres, I also firmly believe that building a solid, classically-based technical foundation is the only way to really become proficient on any instrument. For my beginning students who are children, I typically start with Standard Of Excellence. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student gain confidence in their voice. Singing can be very scary especially at first, but it is my passion to be a cheerleader of the singer. Singing is mostly a mental game, and my passion is to fight that one first. One can have all the technique in the world, but if they don't have confidence, musicality is thrown out the window.
