My first teaching experiences were with my father during solo and ensemble. Having hired me as an accompanist for his students, I found myself rehearsing these students moreso than accompanying them. From that point I felt encouraged to teach and help others perfect their craft. My biggest influences would have to be my past teachers, one of which taught me younger and the other as I matured. I believe that while learning to read and write sheet music, developing technique and feel, and understanding music theory are all important, the most integral part of learning an instrument - as fundamental as it sounds - is to use your ears! I will start off my lessons with the Bastien Piano Basics course. The student will use a lesson book, a performance book, a technique book and a theory book. Once the student has reached a certain level, they will begin lessons in Piano Literature and John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano. I like to start by exploring where the student is at in their musical education and what they are looking to study in private lessons. From there, we build the lesson around them! Once we’ve established where to begin, I’ll ask the student to choose a piece they’d like to perform and I’ll assign them a piece of my own choice as well. For my classical students I'll typically start with art song repertoire and for musical theatre I'll choose a classic piece. Read More
