I am a dedicated and motivated instructor with over 10 years of public school and private experience in Texas, Massachusetts, and Florida. I graduated from SMU's Meadows School of the Arts (Dallas, TX) with degrees in Music Education and Saxophone Performance. As a performer, I have substituted with the Dallas Wind Symphony, performed with MIT's Balinese Gamelan, Gamelan Galak-Tika, and played bansuri (Indian flute) with my husband on tabla at various Indian weddings and venues.
I began teaching private lessons and group classes over 10 years ago immediately after graduating high school and beginning studies at SMU's Meadows School of the Arts. After graduating with my bachelor's degree, I spent four years teaching at public in the suburbs of Dallas, TX and Boston, MA every age group K-12 and almost every type of music education possible – from elementary general music to band, strings, jazz, choir, and theory. I have been an assistant director and a head director; in charge of a full-blown musical, to making sure students can play “Hot Cross Buns.” Throughout all of these experiences, however, I have a deep passion for teaching private lessons and connecting with and motivating individual students to become their best. I am energized by the joys and rewards of my chosen profession. It gives me great fulfillment to know that my life’s work affects people in a positive way, and I would love the opportunity to share this passion with you as well.
I tailor each of my lessons to the needs and desires of each individual. I am fond of using method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Bruce Peterson's Standard of Excellence (or, with school children in a band program, whatever their method book may be), but I also like to bring separate handouts or sheets of exercises, drills, and songs that I have created over the years. I want each lesson to be engaging and fulfilling, and for the student to feel as though they can achieve the tasks set before them for each suceeding lesson.
As mentioned above, I tailor each of my lesson to the individual student I am teaching. I am very encouraging and patient, but also like to push my students to be the best they are capable of being.
