As an educator I aim to introduce my students to skills that may be applied to life outside the practice room. I teach them to communicate, build confidence, and most importantly, develop patience. In 2013 I graduated from Bowling Green State University with a master's degree in saxophone performance. Prior to this, in 2011, I graduated from the University of Calgary with a bachelor's degree in the same field. I am a passionate and enthusiastic teacher. My first teaching experience was my junior year of high school where I got up every Friday morning before school to teach a 6th grade clarinetist who needed some extra instruction as she was blind. It was a sort of "aha" moment in my life where I found out that a career in music education was meant for me. I try to introduce my students to different styles and genres of music. Their repertoire ranges from dances and songs to variations, concertos and sonatas. In order to be able to play such an array of genres, one requires what I like to call a "laboratory of skills". Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I had always known that I wanted to become a music teacher, but this is the time of my life when I really started discovering my potential in the education community.
