My first emphasis is that you have to like what you're playing. I really try to focus on what music gets the student excited. For some of them, it comes quickly. Others it might take a while, and that is okay. Once I find the switch that engages the student's interest, that is my focus. I really emphasize getting students to read music and also understand the key components of music theory, so that they understand what it is they are playing. Read More

My teaching goal is to encourage my students to be lifelong patrons of the arts. I understand that every student may not be interested in a career in music. I encourage students to set goals and work toward them. These goals may include a scholarship audition, playing a piece in front of a family member, or booking their first professional "gig." My main goal is to provide inspiration and inspire a student ( no matter what the starting place) to pick a 'first goal." This "first goal" allow the student to set a goal and create a path for success under the supervision of a trained professional. Read More

Of course, acknowledging accomplishments helps students feel they're progressing, but finding what truly inspires them will help them want to practice and get better. For me, I found scales and theory boring as a kid, so I wished my teachers would teach me how to play my favorite songs and write my own with a little theory mixed in instead of only learning the theory and scales. I aim to encourage my students to want to be the best they can be and to help them feel accomplished by following their dreams and inspirations. Read More

Depending on the level the student is at I will work with them where they are at and what is needed. If a beginning student I will usually start off with working on scales and use visual tools such as books to help aid the process. I will usually get the student to play or perform some sort of song no matter how simple it is, maybe even get them to make up their own song based off of what they learned. Read More
