For younger students, I typically start teaching from Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as it provides a comprehensive method for learning the basics on the saxophne. Once my students have mastered this material, I begin to introduce solo repertoire. For older students, I teach from etude books such as Selected Studies for Saxophone by H. Students want to learn the piano for a variety of reasons. Some arent really sure they want to learn at all, but mom wants them to give it a shot! Others just want to learn that song on the radio! All are fine reasons to learn, and each deserves a personal approach. For very young students just learning the basics, structure provides direction and comfort, so Id recommend jumping into a beginners curriculum such as by Alfred or Hal Leonard and going from there.  I have been teaching in the Columbus area for 14 years.  I have studied piano and voice for 30 years performing and had experience auditioning for and performing in musical theater, opera, and contemporary settings. For beginning brass students, I have used Essential Elements 2000, Standard of Excellence, and the Student Instrumental Course. As students become more capable, we move into method books and repertoire written specifically for their instrument. Lessons include a combination of mastering the physical challenges of the instrument and developing musicality. Music to be studied is chosen based on the needs of the student. My program is one that I have developed over the last 18 years. I use no method books. I ask my students to bring a blank manuscript book that I will fill up as we go forward. I also highly encourage all of my students to have a keyboard of some kind available to them, IE: a piano, organ, or even one of those battery-powered little CASIO keyboards that one can buy for $15-25 at a Salvation Army or Goodwill store. Shortly after graduating from Otterbein University, I became a certified substitute teacher for three consecutive school years (2012-2015). While pursuing my career in music, I also greatly enjoyed my time in the classroom. I was certified to teach grades K-12 and worked at dozens of different school districts in the Columbus, OH area. My experience in these various classroom environments, teaching an array of subjects, helped me develop a comfort level with students of varying backgrounds, interests and age levels. Read More
