I think that, while proper technique and repertoire are important, it is essential that young beginners enjoy playing the piano. My job is to show my students that making music is fun! For beginning students who are children, I typically start with basic guitar studies. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, we will begin learning songs and playing together. For adults, I go off of what the student wants to learn and guide my instruction accordingly. I always try to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. One of the many ways I begin a lesson with a student is by asking them what type of music they enjoy listening to and playing. Once we have this initial discussion, I begin to build the foundation for the lesson plan and my teaching. For example, if a student mentions they enjoy playing Rock and Roll, I will begin with that particular style and simplify it for them.
