Initially (and throughout) I place a high value on performance fundamentals. I start with a focus on proper posture and breathing. Once this can be executed I breakdown the nomenclature of the student's instrument, how to put it together and break it down. For my students who are more focused on skill growth, I stress the importance of putting the technique and skills I teach into context with the songs I assign. During the hour lesson, I spend roughly 5-7 minutes warming up the voice, then we jump right into working on repertoire.
