While I focus on the makings of a good classical trombonist, I also inquire what kinds of music each student likes and incorporate that into the lessons so they have something fun they can relate to while still developing their skills. For the more advanced student I start to introduce excerpts from band and orchestras to teach style that they can bring into the ensembles they play in. For younger students, I use a variety of material but very much like The Royal Conservatory Program. In the age of, "American Idol", "The Voice" and "Glee", everyone wants to be a star overnight. For beginner students I start with the basic for both piano and voice. For voice we start with breathing, pitch, and starting a healthy techinque and proper places to sing from. For piano I follow the Alfred's serious and begin with music theory as well. Once my students advance we begin with new solo repertoire and more advance theory and sight reading. For very young beginning students, I typically start with Faber Piano Adventures, and for older beginners, the Faber Accelerated Piano Adventures or Hal Leonard Adult Learner Series. Once the student has shown an understanding of basic theory and technique, classical repertoire will be introduced, along with level appropriate arrangements of the student's choice music. It's important that the student is taught how to practice a piece effectively to continue growing musically in between lessons, so that lessons can be used to find areas for improvement, and to learn new concepts and material.
