What I like to do in my studio is, set realistic goals for the student. I use "challenges" to help students achieve their goals. And reward them when they achieve them. I like using a lot of games as well to make piano learning fun. So I teach a lot of theory aspects using games with timers, and flash cards, dry erase dices and prizes when goals are meant. I usually start with a beginners book for children or adults.  We go through the lessons at their own speed.  As for practicing the scales, I do not introduce them until the students is thoroughly familiar with the keys (the alphabet of the keys.)  For adults I introduce the scales and arpeggios much earlier. I first focus on the guitar level the student is at. From then on I can make a customized lesson for each student covering basic concepts such as tablature reading, understanding of the fret board, open cords, power chords, right and left hand positioning, picking techniques, and the minor pentatonic scale. Every student requires a uniquely tailored teaching style, but also they possess a unique set of strengths and "weaknesses" that will be addressed. I do not believe in the "cookie-cutter" approach to teaching. I believe that fundamentals (scales, tuning exercises, lip slurs, technical excecises) are important as these are the key to unlocking the instrument as a means of self-expression, by eliminitating the infamilarity and oddness of the trombone. That being said, I believe that technique should be approached in the most musical way possible, and I strive to teach technique through actual music.  My teachers, as were most successful brass players, were influenced by the legendary tubist of the Chicago Symphony, Arnold Jacobs. For adults and intermediate to advanced children, I use a combination of books from different authors e.g. Taffanel Gaubert Flute Method, Marcel Moyse books, for technique development and also many pieces from the classical repertory. I also let the students choose pieces of any style that theyre interested in playing and they can handle.
