For beginner students, it is important to start with the basic fundamentals and techniques, but once those are mastered, there is more freedom to explore. For flute beginning students, I usually start with the Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their skill level. For flute intermediate to advanced students, I try to find out what the student is interested in, what they have previously worked on, and what their goals are musically. I like to focus on fundamentals such as extended scales in various patterns, etudes geared towards development of a specific technical aspect, and solo repertoire containing these fundamentals. For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Hal Leanard's Rubank Elementary Method Cornet/Trumpet. If a student has a grasp of the fundamentals, I work with the basic blues and scales to build a repetoire. For Adults, I like to work with jazz standards as well as H.L. Clarke's Technical Studies for Cornet and Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet. I like to make my lessons fun and engaging. Read More

While I do teach students to read music and teach the theory behind tunes and compositions that we learn, I think that the MOST important element in anyone's pursuit of musical proficiency lay in the ability to connect what one hears to what one plays. Ear training therefore is a large component.
