I love to get students excited about playing the instrument. The basics are important to learn but it needs to be fun first! If you are a beginner, let me show you some easy ways to play along with your favorite songs and get you excited to hear yourself play! Once you get the excitement, you will want to pick up your instrument and practice every day. My philosophy is simple, it is better to play a small amount of time on a consistent basis than it is to practice once for an extended period. Read More

I continue to develop my skills as a musician in a very goal-oriented manner so I like to utilize that aspect of learning with my teaching. Learning an instrument can take a lot of practice and at times can seem like you don't even see a flicker of light at the end of a tunnel. Because of this, I find it very effective to keep focusing on daily, weekly and monthly goals. Read More

I give all of my students a mixture of technical exercises, repertoire pieces, and creative assignments to keep things interesting and varied. We will spend about half of the lesson on technique and theory, and the other half on understanding, and appreciating different musical styles and how to improvise comfortably and confidently over them. I have a much heavier focus on songwriting, and composing than most teachers, and I encourage my students to be as creative as possible while giving them the tools to do so effectively and correctly. I believe that as an instructor, it is my goal to take a student who has a general interest in music and develop that interest into a life long passion for being creative with his or her instrument. That being the case, I have found that there is not a one size fits all approach to teaching guitar lessons. I have found that teaching a student successfully has come through analyzing the individual students' interests, goals and skill level and coming up with realistic expectations that can be achieved from one lesson to the next.
