I am an avid performer of classical and contemporary music and a teacher based in Portland, OR. As a doctoral candidate at the University of Washington, I won the 2015 Concerto Competition and was a member of the scholarship chamber music ensemble for 3 years. I currently am the cello instructor at George Fox University in Newberg, OR and keep a private studio in West Linn, OR and in NE Portland. My instructional methods are customized to fit the individual student's preferences, goals and learning style. I never force my "agenda" or "method" on anyone. I cater to my students' guitar and musical goals. If a student wants to learn to read music, I generally suggest method books such as Hal Leonard Guitar Method or Alfred Guitar Method. Some students do not have any desire to learn to read music, so in that case, I use tablature to write out the songs for them. Read More

There are several methods I use as a professor and they're all dependent on the student, their age and their goals. If they are younger, I like to employ elements of the Suzuki method because subjects like musical notation and theory might be too dense for the student. If the student has the aptitude/and or the discipline I can begin to apply a more systemic approach in terms of practice regiments like scales, practicing sight reading, their rhythmic feel, and even ear intonation and sight singing if the student is prepared for it.
