Overview:
I am a christian, animal lover, especially cats n dogs, n majored in classical music in piano (but i also love jazz n k pop!). I started my piano at age 5 in musical family with a pianist mom n aunt who graduated from seoul national university, like Julliard in america, singer grand parents. I came to america in 1988. I got my bachelor n master of music degree in piano performance from Universiry of Washington while working as a teacher assistant with a full scholarship. I have been teaching since 1988 til now.
EXPERIENCE
I started learning piano since when i was 5 yrs old. I remember i always accompanied the organ with the one i had to use food pedal to make sound in my music classes at school n piano accompaniment at church during students services. I have received numerous number of accompanying awards, piano competition awards, art awards, n writing awards. I have been teaching piano ever since i came to america in 1988 til now. I have also served as my church accompanist for about 25 yrs n almost 3 yrs as a choir conductor. I often play with other instruments such as clarinet n violin n singers for concerts, student competitions, n various occasions such as weddings n parties. Music gives me such joy in life n makes me live my life to the fullest n i hope i can help other people to feel this happiness with me by learning from me!!
METHODS USED
I almost always use Alfred's Basic Piano Library for kids n adults, the same series for young beginners for younger kids. Time to time i use piano Adventure series by Faber n Faber. I focus on flash cards n sight reading books besides the main lesson book since a lot of students do not read well n try to memorize their pieces by ear. I believe strongly that students can't go so far without being able to read properly. I also do ear training to develop students' listening skills of notes to be able to recognize n correct their mistakes on their own, eventually, n even to be able to compose songs if they wish. I sometimes use rhythm study books for students who especially have trouble counting.
LESSON STYLE
I used to push students to practice or progress because i thought that was my duty to make them play well. But as the time goes by n i become more experienced with different kinds of students n their needs, i try to go with each student with their own character n need by asking what their goal is in piano learning. If someone wants to become a professional artist, then i become a real professional n serious, give my best to teach the student to my fullest with everything i have. If someone wants to just enjoy music n be able to play songs he/she likes, then i go easy n help them to achieve it as quickly n the most enjoyable way possible!

64 year old female Phyllis is an excellent ,talented, skillful devoted (to students) piano teacher. When I was age 54 as a fearful new beginner that she encouraged me with so much confidence to try with out giving up...So I made my dream to play with my two hands.Even, infront of audiences as recital. Because of her sacrificed teaching, I overcame my fear(enemy) that was very much significant moment throughout all my life.

Phyllis is an exceptional piano teacher and accompanist. I was her student in high school and college working on Chopin and Liszt. She worked with great taste in music and really contributed to my enjoyment in learning piano. She's a pleasure to work with and has a great sense of humor.

She was a piano player for my church for a long time and I knew she was one of the best piano players in Washington so I decided to get lessons for my two girls from her and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made, they began to make progress in such a short amount of time unlike with other teachers, it was hard to believe. Her passion for teaching kids truly put me in awe. I would hands down recommend her 10/10.

She is a great teacher! At first I was really bad at piano but after a year she helped me become a better pianist! :)

Phyllis is an excellent teacher and invaluable resource to the world of music education! I found her to be an extremely knowledgeable and talented pianist but was truly impressed with her ability to communicate and relate to her students in a way that really supports sustained learning. She is a gem for this organization and for any potential students.

Phyllis is such a remarkable piano teacher. My kids (8,11&14) love having lessons with her. They have improved so much in such a short time. She manages to keep them interested in playing piano. And I don't have to nag them to practice their music either. What more could parents ask for? We couldn't be happier that we found her.
