After starting piano performance at age 12 and music composition at age 14, I shortly graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2012 with a Music Composition/Theory degree and have composed nearly 4 hours of Symphonies, Concertos, Soundtracks, Jazz Combos, Woodwind Ensembles, Choral works, World musics, and other forms of Postmodernism. I love the many facets of music. My love of music, and my best practice, stems from a deep enjoyment of listening to music, as a consumer of sound. Developing my listening ear has been the most useful tool in all my years as a performer. I've played with academic ensembles in a choral setting, and done significant work in small ensemble classical guitar groupings. My most enjoyable long term academic ensemble, however, was the African Hand Percussion Ensemble, as while it had a very strict underlying structure for the cohesion of the group, it was deeply improvisational in nature, my favorite aspect of musical performance. The experience I have teaching goes back to my time at the University of Colorado Denver, I enrolled in an Afro-Cuban hand percussion class, and in a music pedagogy(teaching) course. The music pedagogy course taught me numerous teaching philosophies and required me to teach lessons regularly with a student. I have the most experience teaching beginner students with the Suzuki method. The main focus of Dr. Suzuki’s method is teaching from a place of love and encouragement. I find this method teaches the technical fundamentals of cello playing while keeping the students progressing at rate suitable for their individual needs.
