I always wanted to be an opera singer until I discovered vocal jazz. Now, I write music inspired by jazz theory (sort of) and sing and arrange jazz standards and pop tunes in ways that are the most interesting to me. I love seeing students grow and develop as musicians. Therefore, I set realistic goals and expectations for the student. For just about any instrument, a key approach of mine is to teach students how to play the songs they love - and then the musical building blocks that make up said songs. Then, I teach the rudiments, patterns, and music theory behind those building blocks, and teach the students to be able to figure this all out on their own in the future through ear-training. I tend to like the Essential Elements series for band instruments, the Alfred books for piano and guitar, the Real Book for a wide variety of jazz repertoire. Read More

My approach to teaching is holistic, positive, and gentle and influenced by my interest in music psychology. I begin by learning about the student's background, interests, and goals. Since goals can change as we gain experience and skill, I help my students discover the possibilities available to them as they study. One of the most important parts of my teaching is to help students learn how to practice in healthy, positive, consistent manner and to develop faith that persistent healthy practice will yield life-long fruits.
