My favorite moment is when the student hears himself or herself actually playing the beat or fill that I have been instructing. Reaching this point repeatedly keeps my students practicing and engaged in the process of learning drums. My teaching occurs both on the drumset and on the drum pad. For beginners I usually begin with Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone and Fundamental Studies for Snare Drum by Garwood Whaley. Once the student has a good grasp on basic reading and technique, I usually introduce rudiments and start working on solo or play along repertoire. My mother was a third grade teacher and every year I would put a band together and perform music for her students. I have played all over the east coast in a wide variety of musical settings and genres. I have opened for the legendary George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic in Roanoke Virginia, and I play regularly at some of New York Citys finest jazz clubs such as The Blue Note NYC, Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzys Club Coca-Cola, Birdland, Rockwood Music Hall, and many other venues in NYC.
