I began piano lessons at the age of 5, and organ lessons at age 10. I became the junior organist at Lagonda United Methodist Church at age 14, playing at the early service. By age 17, I became their principle organist and choir accompanist. Five years later, I also became the organist and choir director at Highlands United Church of Christ. I attended Wright State University on academic and music scholarships, and graduated, magna cum laude, in 2001, with concentration in organ, piano, and vocal. Read More

For absolute beginner's I will spend the first few lessons just working on getting a sound out of the instrument and when ready, playing some easily recognized songs (like nursery rhymes), by ear to develop aural skills from the very start. I have played the violin since I was 8 years old in school orchestras and small ensembles. I have also learned Irish traditional music in Ireland, from the Irish in music sessions and in more formal school settings. I spent 9 months there obtaining a Masters in Ethnomusicology. I have been playing since I was 10 years old, and in 2014, I graduated from Cedarville University with a BM in Keyboard Pedagogy. I spent a year in Italy teaching music to children from various backgrounds and cultures. I tend to use the Faber Piano Adventure series as the basis for starting lessons. This series is very widely known and it is really one of the best methods available for teachers to use. I like it because two people are the authors and composers, a husband a wife team, and together they create interesting and enjoyable compositions that students of all ages like to play. They provide a wide variety of types of music from classical to blues to jazz and brance out into Christmas and Disney songs, all in different levels, so students can have a consistent series to grow and to never get bored!
