I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Each student is provided a weekly practice journal. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. I have developed a method for guitar students of all ages to quickly learn chords and scales so that they can not only learn the chord progression to songs, they can also find the correct scale to "solo" and improvise over them. Once the chord structure and scale are learned I accompany the student, playing along with them so that they can practice playing with another musician and soloing. My goal, whether a student purse a career in music or not, is to aid development becoming not simply an instrumentalist, but a musician. Most humans are taught to recognize colors, why not sounds? I encourage improvisation, composition and study of the masters, but my priority is that it all be fun: I wouldn't hold myself to drudgery and certainly wouldn't expect that of a student. I listen to what the student has to say, and also hone in on where they are currently in their musicianship. This allows me to really see what areas need to be focused on specifically. I strongly encourage students to push themselves and will often provide slightly more challenging material to help them improve.
