Instruments:

Studied under Inez Lancaster, professional keyboard teacher in Houston Texas.  Played Professionally for 27 years before becoming a full time teacher. My teaching experience dates back to the 1980's. Encouraging regular practice and choosing songs that fit the student are keys to a great experience....I have been teaching in homes since 2006. Before that I worked in a music store where I worked with music educators as my customers for 11 years. I gained lots of insights into teaching in that time.

I believe we must hear what we desire in our mind before we sing. Therefore I train the singer to create and discover their own individual sound. Singing is simple, not easy, but simple - breath and vowel. However we need an outside expert ear to guide us.

My method of teaching varies from person to person because as individuals, we all have a different way of thinking and understanding to music. But basically I love to start with the fundamental approach no matter which category you fall as a student whether you are a beginner. Drumming is an art an a form of communication. Drumming was used as a communication tool to convey messages from the traditional chief or rulers to the ordinary cities or residents of most of the west african countries of which Ghana is an example of those countries, so it may depend on which style of music the student is interested in. I will say a student interest, will determine my approach.

Instruments:

For teaching clarinet students who are beginners, I use the book authored by Texas Lutheran University clarinet professor, Paula Corley entitled "So You Want to Play the Clarinet". Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I usually move to the Rubank books because of their varied content. If the student is working with a school group, we will sometimes work on that repertoire, but improving technique in general is always my focus. If I were to teach any adults (which I have not had the opportunity to do yet!), I think I would still start with Corley's book but then after that investigate what kinds of music they're hoping to play and touch on those things as well as work on advancing technique. I hope, too, that all of my students have an ensemble to play in whether they're homeschooled, attend a school, or are an adult learner.

Instruments:

My way of working the voice in particular is a combination of yoga breathing techniques, the Alexander singing method and the Stanilavsky method of acting. This to achieve a better awareness of the vibration and awareness of the vocal instrument. As for the guitar, I also combine typing exercises and coordination of the classical school and then move on to the area of chord and harmony construction a little more related to the jazz and contemporary music school. My students enjoy progressively knowing and discovering the possibilities of their instrument and then go looking for their pop sound and their own forms of expressiveness, leaving me as an advisor or coach in the musical forms that they wish to explore and enjoy. That's what it's all about! It is a path of self-knowledge and enjoyment!
