For example if I have a guitar student that really wants to be a lead guitarist I will play the solo of one of there favorite songs and teach them a small part of it or all of it if they are at an advanced level. I encourage those ideas in lessons, and I focus on teaching students to play with musicality. For each individual student, I set reasonable goals for them at the end of each lesson. I tell my students you're not studio/performance ready until you can play through a song 10 times without error. I encourage improvisation. I always say if you can count to 4 you can start learning in less than 10 minutes. I stress the importance of practicing every chance a student gets.
