If you want to improve solo on some scales, we can, of course, DO THAT! Beginner drum students will start with the basics of a rock beat using a full kit. Marching fundamentals are never fun, but we will introduce them over time. Over time, beats become more complex. Fills are introduced. New kick drum patterns are mastered. I generally choose to use Faber as a method book for all my beginning students, using the age appropriate track for each student ranging from too young to read yet to adult learners. I believe that both the lesson book and the theory books are highly important and necessary. Depending on the student and their wants and needs, other books for each level may be added. Once a basic comprehension of reading music and technique have been achieved, I like to branch out into other repertoire of whichever style or styles are most interesting to the student. Read More

I use many different methods since I am of the opinion that all methods have their strengths and their weaknesses.  For children I typically use the Suzuki method and suplement with exercises and outside repertoire to compensate for the weaknesses in the Suzuki method.  I also use the Royal Conservatory method and try to teach its repertoire when the student is at an advance- beginner or intermediate level.
