The first thing I do is determine the student's skill level, what the student can play, and how I can build on that. For a student who has never played before, I begin by explaining the physics of the instrument. Why a string makes a particular sound, what makes that sound higher or lower in pitch and why that is; then how to use that to write or imitate a particular melody. Read More

I only want my students to have a positive experience when leaving our lesson. I am constantly letting them know what they've done well, along with what goals we need to work on. I focus on the sandwich method, which is one positive trait, something to work on, then another positive trait. Everyone is different, so their learning pace is different as well. I do expect them to put at least some effort in at home via practicing (although I know things come up sometimes), otherwise it would be hard to find progress when they haven't practiced what we were working on. I love to challenge and test my students so don't be surprised if I take you out of your comfort zone for a minute or two. This is done to see how far you've come along with my teaching so far. I understand that different people learn at different paces and I will always do everything I can to get you to master your instrument at any speed. I always do my best to introduce students to new ideas so that they are more likely to think creatively. Read More

There are 3 things I have learned in my years of teaching. They are 'Praise, Tact, and Kindness'. I believe everyone benefits from positive affirmations and reinforcements. When giving constructive feedback towards student, it must be done tactfully and with ways in which to improve. Kindness is key in developing a relationship that not only builds trust but also provides yields positive results. Throughout all my years of teaching, students achieve higher results when the teacher builds them up instead of tearing them down. Read More
