If they have had training with another method, I work to blend that method with the Alfred's method during the first month or two of lessons. Once the student has learned the fundamentals, I introduce them to the solo repertoire appropriate for their level and their genre of greatest interest to them. I have taught music classes (choir, music theory, hand bells, recorders, and general music) for Kindergarten-10th grade for seven years, and I have taught private music lessons for over 10 years. I have taught students as young as five years old, and I've had students well into their retirement years as well. Everyone can enjoy learning about music; that's what makes music so unique and amazing. I took seven years of piano lessons in grade school and graduated from Florida State College with an Associate of Arts in Music degree. I also played piano in the Charlton County High School Jazz Ensemble and at the United Methodist Church. I like to start by exploring where the student is at in their musical education and what they are looking to study in private lessons. From there, we build the lesson around them! Once we’ve established where to begin, I’ll ask the student to choose a piece they’d like to perform and I’ll assign them a piece of my own choice as well. For my classical students I'll typically start with art song repertoire and for musical theatre I'll choose a classic piece. Read More
