I will start off my lessons with the Bastien Piano Basics course. The student will use a lesson book, a performance book, a technique book and a theory book. Once the student has reached a certain level, they will begin lessons in Piano Literature and John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano. For children, I draw influence from the organization of the Suzuki method, while still maintaining the emphasis on fun. (Learning TV theme songs, etc) Fundamentals are introduced with memorable examples tailored to the students musical interests. For all other levels of experience, I encourage the student to share with me what exactly it is that they want to learn or need help with. If the student has no idea, I will take over and decide what is missing from the students repetoire, and find the most effective way of tackling these new skills while maintaining fun. I like to start by exploring where the student is at in their musical education and what they are looking to study in private lessons. From there, we build the lesson around them! Once we’ve established where to begin, I’ll ask the student to choose a piece they’d like to perform and I’ll assign them a piece of my own choice as well. For my classical students I'll typically start with art song repertoire and for musical theatre I'll choose a classic piece. Read More
