After high school, I went to Northern Oklahoma College where I played saxophone and clarinet and was awarded the Outstanding Instrumentalist award two consecutive years. After graduating, I attended Oklahoma City University where I played as 1st chair clarinet in the Wind Philharmonic and Lead Tenor in the Jazz Ensemble. For younger students, I always want to make sure our lessons stay fun, while encouraging growth at the same time, so I usually let them pick a song they like, and then I assign another to assist with their musical development. For older students and adults, we really dive into technique and vocal health, with a strong emphasis on technicalities like breath support and placement, and then use that foundation to branch out into multiple genres. Older children just beginning to enter the world of music will begin with the fundamentals of musicianship, sound, and breathing. From there I will progress to rhythm, pitch, and notation. When these skills are mastered I will get the students comfortable with their instruments and begin playing. Students that have a background in music with their instruments will be assessed to determine the level of teaching required. For children, I focus on the comprehension of pitch and note reading. If the child has a song that he or she wants to sing, then we will pursue it if it is vocally fitting. If not, I have a variety we can choose from. We also will pursue the fundamentals of music theory in our lessons as well. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
