I started teaching lessons when I was 18 at a music business and taught there between 3 to 5 hours a week for about 5 years. For the past 5 years I have been teaching at IU. I have taught many different styles from classical to jazz to rock, etc. and have also watched many great teachers and tried to learn from their methods. I have been teaching the flute for many years, dating back to my undergraduate college days. I taught several students that were looking to audition at the school I was at and needed additional help. I have also taught at a summer flute day camp in Michigan for 7 years, working with middle school, high school, and adult students. I currently teach beginning through high school flute students in Pendleton. I graduated college in the Spring of 2020 and then proceeded to get a temporary teaching job as a orchestra director in Pike Township for the first half of the year. This was followed by an elementary teaching position in the same township. I then took a step back to focus on my playing. I am now teaching private lessons and part time saxophone a Pendleton Heights Middle School. Still in search of a full time teaching position but this is something I have always wanted to pursue. For young beginning students, I really like to emphasize the fundamentals using whatever book the student uses for their band class. Once they get a good grasp on the fundamentals, then I start to introduce some solo repertoire appropriate to their skill level. For students who are older, I like to find out what area of the trumpet they want to improve on and structure our lessons to try and improve on those areas, as well as incorporate other fundamentals and solo repertoire. I try to make the lessons as fun as possible and geared towards what the student wants to learn. I like to see where each student's natural talents and personal desires are headed and act as a servant leader to get them there. Students are encouraged to pursue music in the way that will keep them engaged reaping maximum benefits whether that be to build parts of their brain that would have otherwise lie dormant, or become the best solo performer they can be.
