I choose the books according to my assessment of the student during the introductory lesson. The Faber Method is one of the more popular ones. I also use the Alfred All-in-One books series. As supplemental material, I use Keynote Speller by Shaum and Line a Day by Keith Snell.  For solo repertoire, I select methods based on the skills and favorite pieces of each student. We can expound on the de tails but if they are not prepared, we will review the previous lesson so they don't miss the value of that lesson. My teaching style can best be described in a sentence: New concepts, new fingering, new harmony, new rhythm, new literature when first you find the letters from Piano Music then unscrambled these single letters until you can spell PIANO MUSIC which is a gift for all ages. Instead of using existing method books which may or may not contain music that the student can relate to, I like to use the favorite songs of the student.  Once the student makes known his/her request I then create an arrangement of that particular song and tailor it to suit their level ( beginner ,intermediate,advanced ).  This ensures a high level of interest  and motivation on the students part.   For those students who insist on using method books I'm OK with that too ( So the traditionalists are welcome too). For young beginners I usually start with William Monell 's Piano For The Small Fry, John Thompson's Teaching Little Fingers To Play and John W. Schaum's Piano Course Pre A- The Green Book. Within couple months my little musicians are ready for their first recital. I find this method helps the student with dependency of string books and helps to harbor curiosity to the vast world of music and methods beyond one book.
