For violin, viola, cello and bass, I teach the Suzuki method. The Suzuki method is based strongly on memory and takes a systematic approach to introducing music of increasing difficulty. For classical guitar, I start off with the Frederick Noad system, "Solo Guitar Playing", and scales. As skill level increases, I assign more etudes and standard guitar repertoire. For acoustic guitar, I teach almost exclusively finger-picking. I teach the same high standard skills for acoustic guitar that I teach for classical, but concentrate on masterpieces of the repertoire. Read More

I began taking private lessons shortly after I joined the band program in middle school. I continued to take lessons all throughout high school and college. Shortly after graduating high school I was offered the position of drum instructor. During college I taught for several years as the drum instructor at Winter Haven High School. I also taught private lessons to a wide range of students during this time. Shortly after college I became the band director at McKeel Academy of Technology in Lakeland. Read More

When teaching strings to beginners I tend to teach out of a string methods book but I also offer stylistic direction outside of the book. I find this method helps the student with dependency of string books and helps to harbor curiosity to the vast world of music and methods beyond one book. I offer compositions fit to the level of the student and give them the opportunity to bring them up to performance standard. Read More

I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. There is also an Alfred's adult course for the older students. It really conveys everything from actual performance pieces to theory concepts. Once the basics of the piano are learned (i.e reading music, note names and finger positions etc.), pieces will begin to be played. Not to place all my eggs in one basket, I will also personally pick pieces I feel are appropriate with the current skill level of the student, ranging from pop to classical to ragtime to anything I feel would be fun and challenging.
