For children, I do not use books or complicate bibliography to teach. I encourage children to discover music through their own curiosity. Using historical imagery and references of the natural world that surrounds us, is very effective way to help children understand music. Art contains emotion and intellect, so, my intention is that the kids explore that knowledge in a fun and joyful way. For adults, the teaching process is more focus to expand their abilities. For beginning strings students (even young children) to advanced students, I use the Suzuki method along with the accompanying sight reading book, I Can Read Music. Advanced students who have reached Suzuki book 6 and beyond are invited to seek out other repertoire as a supplement to their Suzuki studies. Students who are involved in an orchestra are also invited to bring excerpts of their music to their lessons so that I can help them to feel confident and prepared at playing tests and auditions. I'm a lifelong musician, and have been playing piano for 25 years and violin, guitar, and double bass for over 15 years. I taught K-12 band, orchestra, choir, and general music. I was a guitar songleader a camp for 7 summers. I played in orchestras and jazz bands through high school and college. I also play cocktail piano and campfire guitar for weddings and events. I studied flute for about a year while playing valve trombone in local Detroit area bands. Mostly I have studied flute through personal study and affiliations with musicians with similar interests (improvisatory music). My formal studies were mainly low brass, then voice (two years private instruction at Wayne State University). I feel that my qualifications pale when compared to learning from "jam session" and playing jobs locally I feel "blessed" being able to share my music and views concerning the arts with friends and students.
