For beginning younger students I begin by working a very short time with parents to assure them their children are in a positive learning environment. Parents of small children are encouraged to attend each lesson with their child. The core principles of musicality, breathing, and perspective are taught. The next step is sound and movement. I always start with a strong Classical Foundation, and also specialize in Musical Theatre and Contemporary Styles. Some students love classical music, and we work on Italian arias...while others love 80s Metal Bands, and we work on healthy ways to approach contemporary music. Students of all ages will work out of a technique/method book. Younger students will use Walter Beeler's Method for Cornet/Trumpet, more advanced students will play from Arban's. I emphasize a "classical" approach, especially with younger students to solidify their skills, encouraging intersted students to begin including jazz improvisation into their studies as their skills advance. Students need opportunity to play along with more experience performers and I seek out every chance to insert my students into this role. I have secured opportunities for students to be the opening act for Texas country star Jolie Holiday.
