Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace and is learning things that interest them on a fundamental level. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. It shows me that they not only understand the material, but that they care about what it is they are learning by striving to improve. I also believe it's important for them to feel that what they are participating in is a worthwhile activity that is not only fun but rewarding to explore. Later on, students will learn to read music in-depth--not merely replicating what's represented on the page exactly as-is, but with a broader and deeper understanding of the movements and relatativities taking place within the music, while building an ability (and feeling of mobility) to experiment with re-harmonization, substitutions, and alterations of all sorts. Especially at beginner levels, students often are flooded with an endless stream of lifeless representations, scales, formalities, technicalities, and special names, and as a result, their interest becomes stifled. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Alfred Piano Basics. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to work from Czerny and introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

In 2009, Dan was selected as bass trombonist for the Carnegie Hall Orchestral Winds seminar where he collaborated with the principals from the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, and Philadelphia Orchestra. He has performed with professional ensembles such as Harrisburg Symphony, Waco Symphony Orchestra, and the Gaylen Jeter Jazz Orchestra. Dan has been a scholarship and fellowship recipient for some of the most prestigious music festivals, including the National Orchestral Institute and the Aspen Music Festival. Read More
