Instruments: Guitar Bass Guitar
I was taught primarily in the William Leavitt method, and use these resources to introduce students to the basics of sight-reading, theory, and technique. My personal preference is not to adhere too strictly to any one method however, instead focusing on the application of theory within a more active musical context. Improvisation is extremely important to developing a working understanding of music in my opinion, and much of my lessons are based in actively performing progressions with students, focusing on both comping and soloing. With beginning students, I will lay out all of the fundamentals, teaching all of the scales, basic chords, key signatures and time signatures, and gradually integrate strategies for reading music. Depending on what the student is interested in learning, I will pull from my pool of repertoire - we could be studying a Bach Invention at the same time as a Billy Joel song. Classical music is great for technique and in many ways textbook for teaching harmony, but I play and love contemporary music, and will teach anything, as long as there is some form of musical knowledge to be gained from the material. Instruments: Piano Voice
I believe it is important for voice and piano students to have a basic understanding of music theory, as well as technique. I pull material from a variety of sources. For piano, I typically use Bastien and/ or Hal Leonard. For voice, I build a build upon the "legit" classical foundation of voice training (Similar to a dancer learning ballet first, before other forms of dance) Following that, I cultivate my students to find their own particular genre of vocal style. The first few lessons will be to gauge where the student is at technically, as well as musically. I like to cater to the needs of the student. Lessons can be as fast paced, or slow moving as the student would like. The important thing is to be comfortable with a technique before introducing new ones. Like I stated earlier, lessons will also include a historical study element. Drumming is best taught through studying the great drummers and musicians who have already mastered the instrument. Instruments: Trumpet Trombone
I have been teaching trumpet, improvisation and theory for ten years and have worked with students from beginner to professional level. I have taught private students, clinics, summer workshops and full band classes. I have worked with the Juilliard Outreach Program, Yamaha Canada, the Sterling Hall School and Roy Thompson Hall's 'Save the Music' program. I have also given university level workshops at schools such as Humber College, Vancouver Island University, Snow College, and the University of Toronto. Read More
Instruments: Voice
In the first lesson, I listen very carefully to what the student wants to achieve and how they feel about the way they sing. Then, I begin my strategy of how to devise a skills building foundation based on their needs. After a few exercises, I can understand how quickly they can adapt and try new techniques. If one approach doesn't work, I try another way of explaining it. I also provide notes to reinforce what is discussed in the lesson so the student can retain new concepts. Read More
Instruments: Drums
My most important goal to all my students is to only inspire them to keep working on their craft and to explore new music to listen to. I always communicate with my students to make sure they are satisified with what they are learning and to not get frustrated if they are 'stuck' on a certain lesson/exercise. Experience on learning music and an instrument should be fun and exciting! Read More
