Before instructing a student, i like to find out their reason for starting and overall musical goals. I will then assess which methods will be most effective for each individual student. Sometimes this looks like working out of a book, sometimes it looks like just playing music together and sharing ideas. In general, my goal with all my students is to help them develop a deep personal relationship with music. Read More

One of my first priorities in teaching my students is the emotional and intellectual connection and the discovery of their personal music favorites and match them in accordance with their interest, age, and level. for the beginner student(children), I usually use the Axford Guitar Method, which is one of the most progressive and easy-to-understand methods. It teaches them all the basics of classical guitar technique, with fun arrangements of popular songs that the children are interested in.As for the beginner (adults), I suggest Christopher Parkening Method which is a great beginners method book. For beginning and intermediate guitar students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Complete Edition by Will Schmid and Greg Koch. This book will cover technique, music notation, theory, repertoire, fingerboard knowledge and music fundamentals. It works for children and adults. For beginning students who are learning classical guitar, I use the Aaron Shearer's method which includes detailed lessons on theory, form, fingering, technique, sight-reading, and etc. Nevertheless, I usually use many other books for guitar lessons since I always take into consideration the needs and goals of my students. I like to first assess where the student is at experience wise as well as what their personal goals are. If they are just starting to play guitar I can show them chords and songs that are not too difficult and help them develop their style from the get go. If they are a little more advanced and have a grasp already on certain techniques and scales then I can help guide their interests more and help them realize their goals whether it be songwriting based or performance based I feel my method can help anyone interested. First of all, I would ask the student if music would be his/her career or just a hobby. If it is to be his/her career, my approach would be more theoretical. But if it would be just a hobby like mine, I would encourage the student to learn by ear supplemented with a little theory to be able to learn a musical piece or song in the shortest time possible.
