Hello! My name is Marina Harris, and I am a professional opera singer from Long Beach. I have been singing professionally for about 15 years now, and my experience is primarily in opera, but I have done recording work in all styles--ranging from jazz to musical theater to choral singing. I have sung with the San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Idaho, Carnegie Hall, the Southern Illinois Music Festival, the Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and in Chengdu, China. Read More

My methods depend on both the age of the student and the experience. For example, for a beginner student who's a child I have them start working out of one or two beginner books that I like. Once they have a bit of a foundation, I start working on songs with them. Often it's a song of my choosing, but I always am always up for learning a song of my student's choosing (depending on how difficult it is of course). Read More

I started my musical journey at age 3 in Hollywood, California. My musical inspiration has always been The Beatles and I aspired to be like them. From the first time I picked up the guitar I never put it down. As I grew into my guitar, it became my friend, protector and therapist. As a high school student hearing the last bell ring, I leaped on my back and headed straight to music school which I took way more serious than anything else, knowing that one day I'd make my presence known. Teaching is a major component of my musical life. I enjoy teaching students, rejoice at their progress, and am always on the lookout for new pedagogical approaches. Therefore, a teacher must have energy and enthusiasm to build rapport with students. My approach to teaching balances personal understanding of the student’s needs and goals, a strict approach to technique, and an artistic approach to music-making. As a teacher, I encourage students to search for creative solutions and artistic principles that are relevant to their musicianship. Read More

Whatever the student is interested in, that is the direction we go in, whether specific or not.. we start with your interests.. beginners, we learn songs, intermediates.. scales, and soloing, advanced.. reading, theory, and composition. I am very song oriented, and we choose based upon the students taste, the songs to learn.. Then we do a lot on practice habits, repetition, metronome use, timing, right hand relaxation, posture, left hand correction. Read More

I start out my beginning Guitar students learning the "open string chords" - I teach my students how to tune their guitars in addition to identifying the note names of each open string - I teach my students "chord progressions" (using the "open string chords") - I get my students playing songs as quickly as possible - i ask my students "what songs they would like to learn?" and proceed to teach them those songs - After my students have learned the "open string chords", i progress to teaching them "barre chords" - I teach my students how to use a "capo" Read More

I use various methods and books depending on the style, age, ability etc. I always keep my eye out for new books and open to suggestions. A few examples. With classical guitar students who are over 10 yo I prefer to use Christopher Parkening Guitar Method and Frederick Noad "Solo Guitar Playing" The latter suits more mature (both mentally and physically) students. With younger guitar students , 6-9 yo, I usually start by using basic guitar methods such as Hal Leonard Essential elements or "Everybody's Guitar Method" and my own easy arrangements of popular songs before shifting to Parkening.
