I'm a unique and creative teacher who's passionate about developing the all-around musician. In 2012, I graduated from the Eastman School of Music with degrees in Viola Performance and from the highly acclaimed Music Education program. My time in school helped me to understand the necessity of properly developing musicianship as well as the technical skills required to play an instrument. This leads to more valuable and enjoyable lessons for the students. Read More

The material that my students work on is based entirely on their current strengths with a progression that allows for growth and a sense of accomplishment at my student's pace. Whether you are a complete novice or have a few years of experience, the training I can provide you will help you climb your individual mountain and achieve the success you are looking for. The repertoire is selected based on my students level of ability as well as musical preference, focusing on the necessary skills needed at each step to be successful. Read More

To me, it's important that my students not only gain an understanding of technique and theory, but also an appreciation for the spirit and philosophy of music-making. Whether this includes conversation about each student's unique aesthetic or vision, or the general principles involving listening, leaving space, and communing with other musicians on an almost spiritual level, I do try to integrate at least a little of this type of discussion in my lessons. I love seeing my students succeed and share in their joy when they have reached a goal they have worked so hard for. My biggest philosophy is creating an individualized curriculum that focuses on the student's goals and providing detailed instruction in lessons for their practice sessions. Songs and exercises are fun and sequenced in a way that makes goals attainable for the student. This keeps the students motivated to keep practicing and ultimately meet their goals. Read More

Feeling and noticing that there has been gradual success is key to inspiring students to continue with their instrument. Playing a musical instrument presents numerous challenges mentally, physically, and sometimes emotionally. It is equally up to the teacher and the student to recognize the growth that has occured week to week. As long as the work is being put forth by both parties, finding success (even if small) will not be a difficult feat. Read More

For beginning children, I typically like to use the Alfred series of beginner books depending on the instrument. I also like the students to rely on their ears just as equally, so the other half of the lesson is usually dedicated to learning music without relying on reading music. Of course, this is all dependent on the student's needs or prior experience. More importantly, I want to teach the student what they are truly interested in with music, and I have plenty of material to discuss if they are unsure of this interest. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Mel Bays. Once the student starts to understand the book. I will begin to teach solo appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what music they are interested in and have then tell me they're top song to learn, I try to get them to play something within the first hour. I want then to leave feeling like the you did something and that your money was well spent on my services. Read More
