The way i approach sharing knowledge with students is to present materials and concepts and then set about "right-sizing" the tasks based on each student's individual needs. Anything we want to play can be broken down into its component parts and we work to gain mastery of each element. It doesn't matter how small we make the task if we are progressing! Something may seem difficult, but we find the right way of working on it and we're off and running. Read More

I possess excellent communication skills, that is to say, I listen well to my students before I speak. My students are free and encouraged to express their goals and they become comfortable doing so. They begin to understand that even though I am their instructor, we are working as a team and that my goals for them are directly tied to the goals they have set for themselves. I always use easy to understand and practical piano books chosen based on the student's experience, age, and goals. Read More

I think voice especially has always been viewed as a bit of a mystery... you can't see or touch your voice as you sing, unlike playing instruments, so there's a certain amount of imagination that has to be involved. I do my best to straddle making singing as tangible as I can, and approach things somewhat scientifically ("This muscle is used in this way," etc.) while also inspiring visualization ("Send your sound out into the distance," etc.) I also really think it's important for musicians to be diverse, so not only will we learn chord and strumming patterns on a guitar, we'll also learn how to read simple lead lines of solos, etc. Read More

I teach from a flexible curriculum depending on the student's goals and interests. If someone wants to learn technique, music theory, songwriting, how to play Taylor Swift songs, arranging, composing, confidence, et cetera we will work on what is driving them to take lessons and learn! If the student is younger I will provide them with an organized syllabus and “fun” damentals! If they are older, I will help them find a way to stick with the music and accomplish their goals. I believe in music lessons there must be a balance. Especially on an instrument like guitar. Lessons should consist of a list of certain things almost like a checklist. First there is warm up and tuning. To make sure you are warmed up and in tune there are exersizes I like to start with my students. Once they are feeling warmed up I like to move on to sight reading and notation reading (practiced and unpracticed material) as well as scales, intervals, and arpeggios. Read More

I have been playing guitar for over 40 years. I am well versed in mant different styles and techniques. I believe that playing guitar is an ongoing, never-ending learning experience. I have learned many things from playing with other musicians either with a band or when just jamming with other guitarists. I have taught private lessons on and off for about 5 years to children and adults. Because music is an ongoing learning experience, many times I also become teacher when playing with less experienced musicians. Read More

Famous Violinists That Inspire Through History

...to Ivan Galamian, who, with his wife Judith, founded the school in 1944. Galamian is still recognized as one of the foremost violin teachers of the twentieth century. His life was certainly filled with adventure: as a teenager, he was accepted as a member of the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra. When he was 16, he was arrested and incarcerated in jail, as part of the 1919 Communist takeover in Russia. However, the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra demanded his release as a vital member of the group – and he was freed. Three years later, Galamian quietly left Russia and became a touring concert artist. He picked... Read More

Piano Lesson Plans: What to Expect and How to Prepare

...can be long and monotonous, and it takes a certain type of learned focus for students to be able to keep reading the page due to the repetitive nature of the material.   Improvise   Many teachers fail to add improvisation into their piano lesson plans, but I think it’s absolutely crucial that students of any age and background have time and space to explore creativity with the piano in an instructional setting. When students of any age show signs of wanting to explore the piano, we should enthusiastically encourage them and explain how to get started. Set aside a few minutes ... Read More

The Truth About Elementary Music

...see six grade levels (kindergarten through sixth grade) twice a week for thirty minutes. Although this arrangement may vary from school to school and state to state, most elementary music teachers see their students at least once a week and generally have as many different grade levels as I mentioned above. At one time I was teaching over six hundred children a week, a number that might seem large, but is actually less than some of my colleagues across the country.   Due to the sheer volume of students and frequency in which we see them, elementary music teachers must be incredibly organized ... Choosing Your First Drum Set

...consideration when choosing your first drum set: if you have the whole basement to work with, then no problem, right? However, most of us do not have this luxury, so this will certainly be a factor when choosing the size of the drums you buy. Even a modest set takes up a considerable amount of room. As an example, I play a four piece set of moderate dimensions with just a few cymbals, and it takes up a space roughly 5’ by 6’. Definitely the centerpiece of the room! One can easily see how larger drums (and more pieces) can quickly eat up the space you ... Read More
