For beginning students who are children, I start with the book "Learn to play piano" for piano students and for guitar "Learn to play guitar." It is a basic book with specific essential elements for reading and understanding music. As the student progresses I use to introduce songs for their repertoire applying what they leaned in the book. For Voice lessons is more practice, which includes exercises for breathing, diction, tune, Corporal expressions among others. Read More

The key to my teaching style is to take my personality that has been so effective in concert and use it as a catalyst to inspired my students to gain confidence, set goals, and press on to master their instrument. For the younger students, I tell them to think of their guitar as a teddy bear and hug it like your best friend and that fingering is not your foe but your friend. Read More

My teaching style is conversational. We created a project or topic. I'll tell you my experiences & listen to your questions. I will customize exercises or solutions to any issue you may have. I teach the student how to get a natural feel that includes tone, time, & finesse. The goal is to get the student sounding like they have been playing longer than they have actually been. Applying these abilities to songs the students are interested in is the next step. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio and students homes for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. This will open doors down the road and will enhance his or her capacity for learning*, not just musically but in all areas of intellect. No singular student is typical. Therefore no teaching method is typical, nor is the approach to any given student. Technique, thought process, feel/emotion, pulse/rhythm,ear and theory are all explored to a degree that is comfortably absorbed by the individual. The degree of aptitude reflected by an individual student will commensurate to the challenge that I will offer in terms of a reasonable expectation for success or, more importantly, the great pleasure to be derived from making music, sharing that ability and the personal reward that comes with that sense of accomplishment in communicating with music. I tailor the program to the student's needs. A student seeking a traditional eduction would be presented with method materials such as Simandl, as well as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Pop, jazz and other genres of music could be explored, depending on the goals of the student. As a jazz musician, I find that learning multiple styles opens up whole worlds of expression and concept. I have studied with classical players as well, and have worked through method books and excerpts. Read More

I teach out of instructional books, notably books by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, and Alfred. Sometimes, I use sheet music print outs, or draft up my own exercises. I go back in forth in a non-conventional manner, adapting accordingly to the student's needs. I like to incorporate exercises and warm ups to improve and enchance technique. I also teach songs that the student would like to learn. I'm very patient and rarely rigid in my approach, although I do stick to a general routine that allows a focused approach to learning.
