I always ask my students what specific song they want to play, and then structure my lessons around the building blocks of that song: chords, rhythm, melody, etc. I understand that a lot of guitarists do not care much for the nitty gritty of music theory (especially for rock and such), and while I am admittedly a huge theory nerd I am willing to overlook theory for a more feel-based approach. I incorporate different styles of teaching including 'rote learning', which is essentially learning by ear and imitation, as well as uniquely tailored exercises. I incorporate different warm-up etudes that I use with each student to build basic fundamentals of learning the instrument. And I also encourage students to practice scales and drills to develop their muscle memory. For beginner students, I like to use the Faber books or the Thompson method for piano. I also encourage students of all ages to share what they enjoy listening to and incorporate songs they enjoy as early as possible. As students progress I get into more in depth concepts in music theory and improvisation, to provide a foundation in the language of contemporary music.
