Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. I do not use a heavy handed method of teaching or discipline, though I do impart the importance of practice, diligence, attention to detail, and creativity. At times I incorporate methods, such as the Suzuki method for violin, or Mel Bay for guitar. I love to get students to be creative, so encourage them to write their own music, and spend time working on expressive interpetations of other's music. My first exposure to the guitar came from both my Grandmother and Uncle listening to them play on the Classical guitar and the four string guitar when I was about 12 years old. During High School I discovered some recordings my grandmother had purchased of Chet Atkins playing Classical guitar piece and Larindo Almeida playing a standard Jazz tune.
