Reading music is essential. To me musicians who don't know how to read music are like people who speak without undertsanding the meaning of the words they say. I also focus on ear training and understanding the instrument naturally, being that I feel its best for the player to have a mulititude of approaches to their understanding of their craft. Books I use in my methods are Carmine Appice Realistic Rock, Rockin Bass volumes 1 and 2, Mel Bay's Killer Fills, and Buddy Rich Snare Drum Rudiments. Read More

For beginning piano students, I use Alfred's basic Piano Library. This works well with young children as it has colorful pictures and easy to understand language. For Adults who are just starting to learn piano I like Alfred's basic Adult Piano Course. This course comes with audio CD's to accompany the student each step of the way. It makes it fun. For beginning Guitar students, we go over the parts of the guitar and learn how to tune the instrument. Read More

For Guitar I feel that it is best for everyone to start out learning classical and then branch out to other styles. However, I , as a teacher want to teach everything if I can , while at the same time really focusing on what the students goals are in learning to play and what music gets them excited about playing. So I will use standard guitar teaching materials such as studies from Sor and Giuliani , or Segovia scales , or certain method books by Hal Leonard , Scott Tennant etc...but each student is different and my approach is focused on tailoring everything to each student specifically. Teaching music is my passion! I love seeing my students make a progress and it makes me tremendously proud knowing that I am the one who taught them the new skills. I use an individual approach and lesson plan for each student, tailoring it to the specific student's needs and aspirations. It's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Read More

I like to use a combination of methods and method books. For a beginning band student I would use Standard Of Excellence of Essential Elements. For guitar students I like to use a combination of methods, depending on the student. I like to use the Old Town School's book for their first songs or Essential Elements for guitar. I like to use a method for guitar that emphasizes reading notes instead of just tabs, and also emphasizes rest stroke and free stroke. Read More

I teach music differently. When learning a skill, consistency equals success. Lessons have to be engaging, personalized and fun. When teaching my students, I find out what music they love, their favorite songs and artists. I find out what music they would love to learn. Then I let that guide my instruction by teaching the students songs they want to learn (while teaching chords, theory and ways to improve) starting with the easier songs to keep it fun and engaging. If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
Of course I have a degree in music education. I feel as though music education is one of the biggest things that you said having your plane arsenal because it’s going to make you become a literate musician which is something several musicians like nowadays. Being trained in music theory will help you improve with whatever style or genre you’re in and will further your writing process and take things to the next level which I feel is though every musician needs. I’m not saying you have to have a degree to be a good musician but it’s definitely something that you need if you’re really wanting to be a solid musician.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal practice session for me usually last 4 to 5 hours not days. And usually starts off with basic technique and metronome practice then gradually goes off into music theory concepts and then finishing it out with writing. I feel as though being creative writing is what’s really going to cultivate your sound and playing abilities from what you learn technique wise because you can’t have one without the other both technique and writing creativity tie hand-in-hand with taking your musical abilities and displaying your talent on a wide scale.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
To tell the truth I don’t really rely on books or DVDs to teach people all of my lessons are based off of my own experiences playing instrument live and in the studio with writing. I feel as though that is the best way to really teach a student and have them understand where you’re coming from. I’m not against books or other lesson plans because we all started with those but as a teacher I want to get my students in the habit of dealing with real live musical experiences which is the only way to really take your plane to the next level and improve. to tell the truth I don’t really rely on books or DVDs to teach people all of my lessons are based off of my own experiences playing instrument live and in the studio with writing.
