Instruments:

Guitar: For children, I begin with simple folk songs to teach them chords and strums. From there, we progress to picking patterns. For teens and adults, I use both folk songs and easy pop music. For both age groups, I encourage note reading and some classical work. For classical guitar, I use technique books by Aaron Shearer. Voice: I put a great deal of focus on breathing, open throat and support. I pick repertoire that facilitates the learning of these skills, including folk songs, musical theatre, opera and art song. I use music in English, Italian, French and German, and I incorporate the works of numerous different composers and eras. I have been strongly influenced by Lamperti technique.

I'm a fun loving musician who enjoys sharing my passion for music with my students. I graduated from the College of Wooster with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance and then Florida State University with a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting.  Music has opened many doors both professionally and personally.  I have had the opportunity to tour up and down the east coast while performing with 16 voice professional choir and met my wife through a choir we both were singing in.

I have been teaching private and group lessons for the past 10 years beginning in college. My lessons focus on encouraging practice, exploration through improvisation, creation, and basic techinque. Keeping lessons exciting and fun is a key to motivation for all ages and I have found teaching a combination of modern songs that the student knows and classical literature for learning technique keep the lessons fresh and interesting.

For beginning guitar students, I use the Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1 as supplemental material. For beginning bass students I use the Hal Leonard Bass Method Book 1 also as supplemental material. For advanced and intermediate students, the supplement material will vary depending on their experience and what they specifically want to get out of music lessons.
