I do not introduce music notation usually until the fifth or sixth lesson. I believe that kids learn faster when they beginning learning by call and response or like many call imitation. Every student progresses at their own pace. I write out the homework for the week on a piece of paper for both them and the parent to see. When their expectations are written out, it's easier to see how far they've progressed. Most of my lessons start out with asking how their week went and how much practice they were able to get in. We then review the material from the week before and talk about the progress or any difficulties they may have come across during the week. Read More

When receiving a student I first like to get to know the student by friending them. Asking question as to what their likes are and just getting to know them. For the beginner we start of with a Method book that fits their age and personaity and go from there. For my students, I tailor my methods based on the specific student's musical goals and their experience. I use a combination of method books and my own original teaching material to emphasize certain topics/skills. Instead of going from one page to the next in a music book, I like to combine multiple books and original practices to keep my students interested. For beginners I like to start with Essential Elements 2000, although this book isn't specifically written with trumpet in mind, I do I want to get students making music as soon as possible and EE 2000 is a great start. As students advance I use some of the standard trumpet method books such as - Clarke Technical Studies, Arbans Complete Method for Trumpet, I also write out exercises that can't be found in books but feel will help the student progress.
