Teaching methods will vary depending on the student's knowledge and ability but I do recommend that everyone learns to read music. For steel string players, I start with A Modern Method for Guitar by William Leavitt and add songs the student wants to learn. For classical guitarists, I start with Christopher Parkening's Guitar Method - Volume 1 and then progress onto Carcassi and Sor Studies with additional pieces. At the end of the day, it has to be fun!

I began teaching beginning guitar lessons to friends and classmates in high school. Ever since I picked up the guitar, I knew it was something that I wanted to pursue professionally because of the joy that it brought me. Being able to share that with other people is something I am very passionate about. I continued teaching beginning guitar and advanced jazz harmony to other guitarists in the music program to help pay tuition in college at USC. I taught at Music and Arts in Redmond during the summer after finishing college before moving to the Bothell store within the same organization.

In the world of music education it is important to recognize that everyone learns differently and there is no universally prescribed teaching method that works for all students. Everyone must find how he or she learns best. As a teacher I acknowledge this and incorporate it into my method of instruction. Anyone can find success as a proficient instrumentalist if they are able to learn on there own terms and find what they are doing enjoyable. My main priority is to create a fun interactive environment that excites not only the student but the teacher as well.

My teaching style can vary from student to student but I believe the most important element is that the student remains engaged and enjoys practicing their instrument, regardless of their individual level. If they are very young, I try to have them listen to as much music as possible when they are not practicing because listening to new music is just as important to musical growth as practice. If there is a particular song they are aiming to learn, we tackle it in class and have them practice it at home at least half hour a day. When they are more serious, I try to establish a 45 minute practice regiment that the student should do everyday that can range from certain warm ups, scales and even sight reading if the student is inclined to dive into that musical world. The key element to having the discipline to do so is by having and fun and enjoying this so it's important that nor the teacher nor the student lose sight of that during their lessons. I truly enjoy seeing students learn and grow as a musician and understand all too well when it can be frustrating and seems to difficult. It's easy for me to relate and to find different methods to keep fueling that passion that people like me have for the world of music.

Music and teaching have always been an essential part of my life: This was true as a teenager and student, when I worked in dance music bands, played in a classical guitar duo, performed in a Rock musical or taught classical guitar and electric bass. This was true when I taught literature, philosophy and mathematics as a middle and high school teacher. It's still true today, when I play Jazz guitar in various Seattle based Jazz bands, or write and produce songs and film tracks. All that would not have happened without the support of great teachers who taught me the classical guitar technique, the flow of music in Argentinian guitar pieces or the swing and groove of Jazz Standards and Gypsy Jazz. Now, I want to pass on my fascination for music and my skills as a musician.
