Goals are always tailored to individual student interests. I like to assign practice homework, which is a mix of technical exercises and song-based learning using student-preferred music. I love to watch students peel back the layers of the onion and discover how their favorite artists make music, from learning common chord progressions to transcribing solos note-for-note to imitating playing styles. For beginners, I show them basic chords (Major, Minor and Diminished) if they're a guitarist and if they're a bassist, I teach them octaves and basic waking lines. Once they progress, I show them common scales and chord progressions used in modern music and focus on developing technique. If they're intermediate to advanced, I ask them what they feel they need work on and we focus on that.
